Solomon Greenberg Trial Moot | MacIntyre Cup | Sopinka Cup
The Solomon Greenberg Trial Moot Competition occurred on November 26, 2016 at the Manitoba Law Courts. Agapi Mavridis placed first, while Adriel Agpalza was runner-up from the finalists which also included: Brendan Mahatoo, Melanie Wire, Stephanie Savoie, Abram Saper-Silver, Andria Huculak and Stefanie Goldberg. Agapi Mavridis and Adriel Agpalza went on to represent Manitoba at the MacIntyre Cup (Western Canada’s Trial Moot Competition), hosted by the University of Alberta from February 9 – 11, 2017, where they placed first! This win brought them, and their coaches, The Honourable Justice Richard Saull and Judy Kliewer (Federal Department of Justice Prosecutions Services), to the Sopinka Cup, held March 17 – 18, 2017, in Ottawa.
Lenczner Slaght/CLA Gale Cup Moot
The 2017 Lenczner Slaght/CLA Gale Cup Moot took place from February 17 – 18, in Toronto. The appellant team, Abram Saper Silver and Davis Hirsch, placed 7th and the respondent team, Karas Elbardisy and Andria Huculak, placed 6th. They were coached by Michelle Bright and Melissa Hazelton, with the experienced support of Ami Kottler from Manitoba Justice. Professor David Milward was the faculty supervisor.
Harold G. Fox Moot
At the Harold G. Fox Moot on February 24 – 25, 2017 both Manitoba’s appellant team, Justine Smith and Brianna Bogucki, and respondent team, Daniel Reimer and Benjamin Johnson, made it to the semi-finals. At the Awards dinner Justine Smith and Daniel Reimer received honourable mentions for their oral advocacy and Ben Johnson and Daniel Reimer also received an honourable mention for the respondent’s factum. The team was aided by Stacey Dunn as team researcher and faculty supervisor Professor Adriane Porcin. The team is grateful to its coaches, Michael Jason from Richardson International Limited and John Myers of Taylor McCaffrey LLP.
The Laskin Moot was held on March 3 – 4, 2017 in Ottawa. Our team, consisting of Tarik Daoudi, Danielle Dubois, Gwen Muirhead and Kelsey Yakimoski, were awarded the Spirit of the Laskin award. This award is presented to the School that best exemplified the Laskin spirit of fair competition, commitment to bilingualism, and professional camaraderie. Faculty coach was Professor Guillaume Dragon.
Canadian Negotiation Competition
On March 3rd and 4th, twenty-four students from law schools across Canada gathered at Robson Hall, Faculty of Law, for the Inaugural Canadian Negotiation Competition. Both University of Manitoba teams, Shantel Saliga & Samantha Holloway and Sharu Ratnajothy & Stephanie Savoie, turned out extremely strong performances, expertly coached by Michael Weinstein of Hill Sokalski Walsh Olson LLP and Steven Meltzer of Feuer Law Corporation.
Kawaskimhon Moot, also referred to as the Talking Circle Moot, encourages Indigenous Values and Concepts of Dispute Resolution. This event took place on March 9th in Calgary. Our team consisted of Rayanna Hourie and Victoria Perrie, along with researcher Madison Urschatz and faculty supervisor Professor Wendy Whitecloud, Director, Academic Support Program, Robson Hall.
Davies Corporate Securities Law Moot
On March 10 – 11, 2017, The Robson Hall team placed 5th overall in the Davies Corporate Securities Law Moot. The team consisted of Joel Refvik, Andrew Konopelny, Yassir Al Naji and Kyle Mirecki. The team was assisted by researcher Kajia Eidse Rempel and successfully coached by Ari Hanson of Fillmore Riley LLP and Sharyne Hamm of Thompson, Dorfman, Sweatman LLP. Individually, Andrew Konopelny was the 6th highest rated oralist, while Yassir Al Naji placed 9th.
