This course examines the realm of philanthropy, a sector sometimes described as the third sector in contradistinction to the private and the public sector. It investigates the origins of, and regulation of, charities and charity law as well the regulation of other non-profit entities. Typical topics considered in this course include the social, economic and cultural importance of an ethic of giving, the tax benefits attendant upon charitable status, dimensions of fund-raising, public and private foundations and terrorism and international charities.
