In my process applying to law school, I rarely saw any information about French language rights and its importance mentioned. All other things being equal, the opportunity to continue and enhance my French language training in a legal capacity set the school apart. As my first year was completely online and as I was not in Manitoba, I was completely isolated and missed out on the social aspect. Even if you decide the program is not for you, it will improve your French language skills, expand your perception of the law, and boost your confidence to go outside your comfort zone as you move through your legal career. “My introduction to the bilingual program at Robson Hall was somewhat shocking. I’d expressed my interest the day that I was assigned to a section and a few hours later I received an email indicated that I was now part of the program. While this was shocking, it turned out to be one of the best surprises in my life. Since I finished high school 10 years ago my chances to speak in French and participate in the Franco-Manitoban community had been few and far between. The bilingual program at Robson Hall gave me the opportunity to reintegrate into the Franco-Manitoban community by way of an accepting and encouraging environment. However, the benefits I received from this program were more than just personal. The program also gave me a sense of direction for my career. Even with all of the information we are given when we study law, it is often hard to know what kind of impact you want to make. The bilingual program gave me the opportunity to get a summer job after 1L where I got to help the French community. This job gave me direction for my career and helped me realize the kind of impact I want to make in the future. I can’t express enough the value this program gave to me.”

« En tant qu’étudiant de l’extérieur de la province, j’ai décidé d’étudier à Robson Hall en raison du programme bilingue. Dans mon processus de demande d’admission à la faculté de droit, j’ai rarement vu de l’information sur les droits de la langue française et son importance mentionnée. Toutes choses étant égales par ailleurs, la possibilité de poursuivre et d’améliorer ma formation en français dans un cadre juridique a fait de cette école un endroit à part.

Ma première année s’est déroulée entièrement en ligne, ce qui signifie que je n’ai pas eu l’occasion de faire l’expérience de la partie sociale de l’école. La faculté de droit est intense et, pour moi, la camaraderie avec les pairs est un élément crucial de la réussite des étudiants. J’ai indiqué mon intérêt le même jour que j’étais assigné à une section, et quelques heures plus tard j’ai reçu un courriel indiquant que j’étais maintenant partie du programme. La vérité est que ce choc était le meilleur de ma vie. Depuis que j’ai fini l’école secondaire il y a dix ans, mes chances d’utiliser mon français et de participer comme membre de la francophonie manitobaine étaient peu nombreuses et rares. Le programme bilingue au Robson Hall ma donner la chance de réintégrer dans la francophonie dans un environnement encouragent et acceptent. The future of legal education in the common law increasingly necessitates a French language aspect. There are communities throughout Canada that desire legal services in French and limited educational opportunities outside of Québec that offer that. With the official recognition of the A2JF concentration, it’s a start towards more appreciation of this need.

L’avenir de l’éducation juridique dans la common law nécessite de plus en plus un aspect francophone. Il y a des communautés à travers le Canada qui désirent des services juridiques en français et des opportunités limitées d’éducation en dehors du Québec qui offrent cela. Avec la reconnaissance officielle de la concentration A2JF, c’est un début vers une plus grande appréciation de ce besoin.
