Minimum requirements

To be considered for entry into the Master of Laws (LLM) program, in addition to the admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, students must hold:

  • a JD or LLB from a recognized university; or

  • a non-law degree relevant to the proposed research

Prospective LLM students must also have:

  •  a demonstrated English language proficiency (Eg. Minimum TOEFL internet-based score of 100)
  •  a minimum 3.0 GPA in the last two years of full-time university study.

Application process

Applications are available through the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The in addition to transcript(s), each of the following documents are required:

Statement of Intent

The statement of intent should be no more than 2 pages double-spaced and must include the following:

  • a brief description of the area of legal study (1 para)
  • how an LLM will help you achieve your career or academic goals (1-2 paras)
  • what steps you have taken to ensure you are prepared to engage in intensive research and academic writing at an advanced level of legal graduate studies (1-2 paras)
  • how an LLM undertaken at the University of Manitoba will assist you in advancing your goals (1-2 paras)
  • what resources and research expertise at the University of Manitoba will help you achieve your goals (1-2 paras)

Proposal

The Proposal should be no more than 3-4 pages and must include the following:

  • a description of the area of law or legal study you intend to pursue including the specific area of legal concentration or specialization you are proposing to pursue (1 page)
  • proposed research topic including a thesis statement or specific research question(s)
  • your method for answering the research question(s); if you are planning on doctrinal analysis, explain which research resources will be of most use to you.
  • explain how you are experienced or educated in your proposed research area
  • the original contribution of your project to legal research
  • the impact your work will have on the discipline

CV

The CV should include the following:

  • what you are doing presently (school, work, etc.)
  • your standing in your law degree or legal studies degree (i.e. quartile, percentile, ranking etc.)
  • education history (list all degrees completed or undertaken but not completed or expected date of completion)
  • work history including professional certifications
  • academic awards, prizes or scholarships or other achievements
  • extra-curricular activities while in law school
  • publications if any

Recommendation Letters

Applicants are strongly advised to provide additional materials demonstrating research potential (i.e. copies of publications and other written works). Please email publications or other written works to lawgrad@umanitoba.ca. Be certain to provide your GS applicant number in the subject line.

Given the competitive quality of the LL.M. program, satisfaction of the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.

Completion of our research intensive, thesis-based LL.M. does not entitle the degree-holder to practice law in Canada.
